According to the Vernon Teachers Association, recent surveys highlight growing concerns among B.C. teachers who report increasing workloads and fewer resources to support their students.

In a press release, the VTA said the challenges are compounded by chronic underfunding in public education, leading to a crisis point that impacts both educators and students alike.

With 15 per cent of teachers considering leaving the profession within the next two years, VTA president Dave MacKenzie emphasized the urgent need for significant investment in teacher retention and recruitment.

“The back-to-school season is always an exhilarating time,” said MacKenzie. “Teachers, much like their students, are filled with excitement about meeting new faces, developing creative lesson plans, and setting goals for the year. However, we also face ongoing challenges, particularly with staffing shortages that require teachers to stretch their resources to fill in gaps and ensure every student receives the support they need.”

There are more than 660 educators in the Vernon School District.

“Public education in British Columbia needs a dramatic course correction. We must focus on what a well-funded education system could achieve for our students,” MacKenzie said. “Imagine a school environment where every student has access to a dedicated counsellor, sufficient teachers on call to cover routine absences, and early intervention support for students with special needs. These should not be mere aspirations — British Columbia’s families deserve better.”

The VTA said recent discussions with partners from CUPE, DPAC and SD22, and new superintendent Karla Mitchell, have reinforced the value of open and transparent communication.

“We are dedicated to continuing our work on employee wellness and fostering an environment where compassion, curiosity and understanding guide our actions,” MacKenzie said.

MacKenzie also highlights the importance of strong connections in fostering healthy, successful organizations, whether within a union, a school, a school district or a family.

“The strength of any organization lies in its connections — how we communicate, support one another, and collaborate to achieve shared goals. Building and nurturing these relationships is crucial to our success, and we are committed to ensuring that our members feel connected, valued, and supported in every aspect of their professional lives,” he added.

The VTA is gearing up for local bargaining this fall and encourages members to actively participate in the process.
